แม่น้ำสาละวิน ถือได้ว่าเป็นแม่น้ำนานาชาติที่ยาวที่สุดสายสุดท้ายในภูมิภาคอุษาคเนย์ ที่ยังคงไหลอย่างอิสระ อย่างเป็นธรรมชาติ ‘สาละวิน’ หรือ ‘ทาลวิน’ ที่ชาวพม่าเรียกขาน หรือ ‘น้ำคง’ ที่ชนเผ่าพื้นเมืองในไทยและพม่าเรียกกันนั้น มีต้นกำเนิดจากการละลาย ของหิมะบริเวณที่ราบสูงธิเบต เหนือเทือกเขาหิมาลัย ก่อนไหลลงสู่มลฑลยูนนาน ประเทศจีน ที่ซึ่งเรียกสายน้ำนี้ว่า ‘นู่เจียง’ จากนั้นก็ไหลต่อเข้าสู่แผ่นดินเขต ประเทศพม่าผ่านรัฐฉาน รัฐคะยา ก่อนที่จะกลายเป็นแม่น้ำกั้นพรมแดน ระหว่างไทยกับพม่าที่จังหวัด แม่ฮ่องสอน ตรงข้ามกับรัฐกะเหรี่ยง
หลังจากไหลกั้นพรมแดนไทยกับพม่า 118 กิโลเมตร จึงไหลลงมาบรรจบกับแม่น้ำเมย ที่บ้านสบเมย จังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอน หลังจากนั้นแม่น้ำสาละวินจึงไหลวกกลับเข้าประเทศพม่า และไหลลงสู่มหาสมุทรอินเดียที่อ่าวเมาะตะมะ ที่รัฐมอญ รวมระยะทางทั้งหมด 2,800 กิโลเมตร นับเป็นแม่น้ำสายที่ยาวเป็นอันดับที่ 26 ของโลก
พันธุ์ปลาในแม่น้ำสาละวิน รวมทั้งในลำห้วยสาขาบริเวณพรมแดนไทย-พม่า ในเขต อ.สบเมย และ อ.แม่สะเรียง พบพันธุ์ปลาที่ชาวบ้านจับมาเป็นอาหารได้ถึง 70 ชนิด แยกเป็นปลาหนัง 22 ชนิด ปลาเกล็ด 48 ชนิด และในแม่น้ำสาขา โดยเฉพาะในแม่น้ำปาย และแม่น้ำเมย พบสายพันธุ์ปลาอย่างน้อย 170 ชนิด โดยเป็นปลาเฉพาะถิ่น ประมาณ 57-60 ชนิด เช่น ปลาตะเพียน ปลาหมูค้อ เป็นต้น
แม่น้ำสาละวิน ได้สร้างรายได้หลักให้กับชาวประมงและพ่อค้าปลา ราว 60 ชนิด โดยมีโรงงานแปรรูปปลาและร้านอาหารหลายแห่งใน จ.แม่ฮ่องสอนกับ จ.ตากจะเป็นผู้รับซื้อหลัก และว่ากันว่า แม่น้ำสาละวิน นั้นเป็นแหล่งโปรตีนที่น่าสนใจแห่งหนึ่งของโลกเลยทีเดียว เพราะใช่เพียงแต่หล่อเลี้ยงคนแม่ฮ่องสอนเท่านั้น ปลาจากแม่น้ำสาละวินยังถูกแปรรูปส่งไปขายในกรุงเทพฯ และมาเลเซีย
